HBS Abroad: Field Biology Travel Programs

Highlands Biological Station Abroad offers immersive travel experiences that connect students and lifelong learners with some of the world's most biologically rich regions—from the cloud forests of the Andes to the iconic landscapes of the Galápagos and Patagonia.

These programs combine hands-on field science with cultural exploration, expanding our understanding of ecology, evolution, and conservation across borders. Each journey is led by Dr. Jim Costa and designed for curious adults of all backgrounds.

The HBS Abroad Experience

Led by Dr. Jim Costa

Every program is guided by Dr. Jim Costa, Executive Director of HBS—not a tour operator. You'll observe, collect data, and think like a biologist in the field.

Biodiversity Hotspots

Destinations are chosen for extraordinary ecological richness—places where evolution and conservation come alive in ways no classroom can replicate.

Small, Engaged Groups

Intimate group sizes mean more time with Dr. Jim Costa, richer conversation, and connections that last well beyond the trip.

Culture & Conservation

We weave local history, indigenous knowledge, and the human dimensions of conservation into every itinerary—science in full context.
