Stay Awhile
Whether you're resting after a trail adventure, looking for a scenic picnic spot, or gathering your group in nature, our outdoor facilities are open to walk-in visitors. Come explore the campus, sit by the lake, spot wildlife, and soak in the mountain air.
Facilities may occasionally be reserved for visiting classes, research groups, or events. Groups whose activities align with our mission — to foster research, education, and conservation focused on the rich natural heritage of the southern Blue Ridge, a global biodiversity hotspot — are welcome to inquire about rentals.

Black bears are a natural part of our mountain environment and are sometimes spotted near the Station. Some bears in the area have been known to approach picnickers in search of food.
- Only eat at the designated picnic locations listed below.
- Dispose of all trash in bear-proof containers.
- Always lock your vehicle when unattended — bears are curious and capable of opening car doors!
HBS is home to an extraordinary variety of native wildlife. For their health and your safety:
- Do not feed any wildlife. This causes animals to lose their natural fear of humans, become aggressive, and suffer nutritional harm.
- Observe from a respectful distance and enjoy the view.
Our only public restrooms are located inside the Nature Center, which is closed seasonally. Please plan your visit accordingly and check hours before arriving.
Questions about current Nature Center hours? Contact us.
You're welcome to bring a small camp stove to warm food. These may be used at any picnic table. You are responsible for cleaning up all spills and messes.
Thank you for helping us protect the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Highlands Plateau!
Our Outdoor Facilities
Amphitheater
Tucked just behind the Nature Center, the amphitheater offers five grassy, stone-lined terraces — perfect for relaxing after a hike, hosting a group presentation, or gathering for outdoor education. A small stage at the front features the fun "Pitcher This" photo stand-ins for a memorable photo op during your visit.
Open to walk-in visitors. May be reserved for classes and events.
Cook Pavilion
Located just beyond the amphitheater along the edge of the meadow, the Cook Pavilion is an ideal sheltered gathering spot for any weather. Its versatile picnic tables can convert to benches — perfect for a quiet lunch or a group gathering, sun or rain.
Made possible through the generous support of Mountain Findings.
Open to walk-in visitors. May be reserved for groups.
Meadow
Our open meadow sits beside the Appalachian Ethnobotanical Garden — a beautiful setting for a blanket picnic, relaxed conversation, or simply watching native birds and pollinators pass through. Our newly designed fire pit makes this a special spot to unwind and connect with nature.
Open to walk-in visitors. Blankets and camp chairs welcome.
"Sto" Teaching Pavilion
Overlooking the serene waters of Lindenwood Lake, the "Sto" Pavilion is a peaceful spot to relax when not in use as an outdoor classroom. In warmer months, watch fish and Common Snapping Turtles from the deck; Mallards and other waterfowl can often be spotted year-round.
Made possible through the generous support of the Highlands Biological Foundation.
Open to walk-in visitors. Often reserved for classes and research groups.
Illges Overlook
Once the site of the historic Illges Cottage, this charming overlook now offers two picnic tables and a beautiful lakeside view of Lindenwood Lake. Spread out a blanket on the lawn or sit at a table and take in the peaceful surroundings.
Located off Lower Lake Road, just across from the north entrance to HBS.
Picnic Tables
Looking for a quick and easy spot to enjoy a snack or take a break? Picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis outside both the Weyman Building and the Nature Center. No reservation needed — just pull up a seat!
Available whenever campus is open. Bear-proof trash containers nearby.
