Thoughtfully designed by landscape architects Warren Byrd, Sue Nelson, and Lila Sargent, the project enhances accessibility, celebrates regional ecology, and connects visitors to the natural and cultural heritage of the Southern Appalachians.
Key features include:
-
A Discovery Garden showcasing native flora, geology, and water elements
-
A fully accessible meander path interwoven with native plantings, stream features, and seating
-
Interpretive spaces including a threshold garden, vernal pool, and relief map of the Highlands watershed
-
A bog and rain garden serving as a transition to the historic garden, pavilion, and Appalachian ethnobotanic display
This dynamic garden experience invites visitors to explore the wonder of Southern Appalachian biodiversity while improving the educational and aesthetic experience for all.
