Highlands Biological Station

Gather

Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to rest during your trail adventures or a scenic setting for a picnic, we have the perfect place for you! These areas are open to walk-in visitors but may occasionally be reserved for visiting classes, research groups, or events hosted by the Station or Foundation.

Our facilities may also be rented by public groups whose activities support our mission: to foster research, education, and conservation focused on the rich natural heritage of the southern Blue Ridge, a global biodiversity hotspot.

For questions about reserving a space on campus for your group, please email us at hbs@wcu.edu.

Facility Use Guidelines

We’re thrilled to welcome you to Highlands Biological Station! To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone—humans and wildlife alike—please take a moment to review the following guidelines:

Bear Safety

Black bears are a natural part of our mountain environment and are sometimes spotted near the Station. Some bears in the area have been known to mock-charge picnickers in search of food. To reduce the risk of a bear encounter:

  • Only eat at the designated picnic locations listed below.

  • Dispose of all trash in bear-proof containers.

  • Always lock your vehicle when unattended—bears are curious and capable of opening car doors!

Respecting Wildlife

The Station is home to a wide variety of native wildlife. For their health and your safety:

  • Do not feed any wildlife. This can cause animals to lose their natural fear of humans, become aggressive, and suffer from poor nutrition or illness.

Restrooms

Please note that our only public restrooms are located inside the Nature Center, which is closed seasonally. Be sure to plan your visit accordingly.

Food Preparation

If you need to warm up food during your visit, you’re welcome to bring a small camp stove. These may be used at any picnic table, but you are responsible for cleaning up any spills or messes.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us protect the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Highlands Plateau!
