Soon after acquisition, the earthen dam showed signs of failure. In 1940, it broke — sending floodwaters down Mill Creek and washing out a bridge along Highway 26.
Reconstruction was completed in 1942, six inches higher than before. Engineering and stewardship became inseparable from science.
