In the late 1800s, the Ravenel family assembled thousands of acres across the Highlands plateau. By 1893, they had dammed five creeks to form a lake — transforming forest into an intentional mountain park.

By 1895, Lindenwood Park featured carriage roads, stocked ponds, rare water lilies, a boathouse, and handcrafted boats. It was both private retreat and public gift, generously opened to visitors by Samuel Prioleau Ravenel, Jr.
