2017 Highlands Nature Center Photography Contest

Natural Wonders of the Highlands Plateau

Thank you for sharing your photographs of our beautiful plateau. Please use the guidance below for taking and submitting your photos.  

Deadline to submit photos is June 21, 2017.

Each photographer may submit up to 3 photos.

The photo must illustrate a natural aspect of the Highlands Plateau.

Only electronic photographs will be accepted.

  • Both horizontal and vertical photos accepted
  • Image size should be a minimum of 3600 pixels in the long dimension
  • Photos should be submitted as .jpeg, .tif, or .jpg files
  • Photos may be in color or black and white
  • No names or other information (date stamp etc) should appear on the photograph
  • Images must maintain the integrity of the subject. Manipulation of images should be limited to basic sharpening and cropping. Images should contain only the subject matter as originally seen through the viewfinder.

All images submitted must be released by the photographer to the Highlands Biological Foundation/Station (HBF/HBS) for royalty-free reproduction by HBF/HBS in any media, including websites, printed promotional/fund-raising materials or social media.




By submitting your photos, you grant HBF/HBS the right to reproduce, distribute and publicly display the photographs through December 31, 2018 and the right to use your name with the photographs. However, you maintain all rights to the photograph. The HBF/HBS will print and mat each entry. HBF/HBS will give each photographer their matted photos at the conclusion of the exhibits.

Submittals: Photos and release should be emailed to highlandsbiological@gmail.com by midnight, June 21, 2017.

The subject line should read “photo contest.” The body of the text should include the photographer’s full name, “adult” or “youth”, contact information (email address and phone number of photographer, or guardian if the photographer is younger than 18), and the category/location/subject of each photograph.

Photos should be named using the following template: Category-photographer.xxx. If one entry includes more than one photo in a category, name them category1, category2 (landscape1-doe.xxx, landscape2-doe.xxx).

Entry Fee: The entry fee per photograph is $10 and can be paid electronically HERE or by check made out to the Highlands Biological Foundation and mailed to P.O. Box 580, Highlands, NC 28741. Your entry is not complete until the fee has been received.


Mountains and Valleys– landscapes or viewscapes

Waterways – rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, or water falls

Small Wonders – through a macro lens

Winged Creatures – bugs, birds, bats (please do not harass or damage your living subjects)


Youth – under 18

Adult – 18 and older

Evaluation Criteria:

Photographs will be evaluated on how well the photograph captures some aspect of the natural character/beauty of the Highlands Plateau, the uniqueness of the aspect of the subject captured by the photographer, and composition and technical expertise.   Photographs will be exhibited at the Nature Center (930 Horse Cove Rd) on the following dates:

Mountains and Valleys: July 3-8

Small Wonders: July 10-15

Winged Creatures: July 17-22

Waterways: July 24-29

Winners in Each Category: July 31-August 5


Best in Category adult, Best in Category youth, and Runner-up, will be awarded in each category and will be announced at the beginning of each exhibition week. A People’s Choice Award will be awarded each week to the photo that receives the most votes from visitors to the Nature Center that week and will be announced after the category exhibit closes.

A celebration of all the photographers and their art will take place at the Nature Center on Sunday, August 6.
